Carbondale, in southern Illinois, grew up around the railroad, and this view records the passenger depot that served travelers arriving and departing the town. Stations like this one were the public face of a rail line, where mail, freight, and passengers came together, and in the decades between 1880 and 1920 they were often the most substantial buildings in small towns. The print is part of the Wittemann Collection at the Library of Congress, and its notes credit the E.E. Scott Co. as the publisher, which points to the commercial postcard and view trade that circulated such images widely at the time.
