This architectural drawing cuts straight across the Library of Congress's main building in Washington, D.C., showing its walls, floors, and interior spaces as if the structure had been sliced open. Such sections let builders and viewers see how tall rooms stacked and connected, which matters in a building as ornate and layered as the Library's. The Library, the national library of the United States, was housed in its Capitol Hill building from the late 1890s, when its reading room and great dome were among the most admired public interiors in the country. The drawing is also a record of design work, since sections like this were made to guide construction and to present the building to officials and the public.
