Labeled as a section, this design shows the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., as a cut-away view of its interior layers rather than its street facade. The catalog gives the style as German Renaissance, but the library's main building, the Jefferson Building completed in 1897, draws mainly on Italian Renaissance and Beaux-Arts models, so that label deserves caution. Architects used sectional drawings like this to show how floors, reading rooms, and book stacks fit within a large masonry structure. The record offers little about its maker or exact date, so it is best read as a document of the building's planning.
