The title points to the last photographic sittings of Abraham Lincoln, taken in Washington in early 1865, a few months before his assassination in April. Alexander Gardner's studio made the portraits, and the face in them is noticeably more worn than in the earlier pictures of the president, reflecting the strain of the Civil War's final year. Because so few photographs of Lincoln from this period survive, images like this one became the basis for many engravings and printed portraits circulated after his death. Viewers often read the lines in his face as a record of those years of war and political pressure.
