In Galesburg, Illinois, the photograph records an anniversary observance at which President William McKinley gave an address, commemorating the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debate held on the Knox College campus. That was the fifth of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas during their contest for an Illinois U.S. Senate seat, and the series helped make Lincoln a national figure. Four decades later, the event shows how the town had come to treasure that encounter as a source of local pride. The print carries the names of Galesburg photographer Allen Ayraulot Green and Rise Studio.
