Few buildings are recognized as quickly as this one, and its plain name only became official in 1901, when Theodore Roosevelt had it adopted for the executive mansion. Irish-born architect James Hoban designed the residence, and John Adams moved in during 1800. British troops set fire to the building during the War of 1812, and it was whitewashed afterward, which helped give it the pale appearance it is known for. Its long record of presidents living and working inside makes it one of the most recognizable landmarks in Washington, D.C.
