Few 1863 political prints tie together as many threads as this one: its subjects include Napoleon III, Jefferson Davis, the Confederate cruiser Alabama, and the French occupation of Mexico. Oliver Evans Woods issued the lithograph in Philadelphia that year, and it was deposited for copyright on July 1, 1863. Its title points to the diplomatic tension of the Civil War, when France was weighing recognition of the Confederacy and the Alabama, built in Britain, was raiding Union shipping. Viewers can read the print as a commentary on how European powers and the Confederacy might find common ground while the Union fought on.
