Posed in four tiers at Hot Springs, Arkansas, in March 1912, this Brooklyn club photograph catches the team during spring training, when clubs left the cold Northeast to get players into shape before the season. Among the thirty-one men are Zack Wheat, Jake Daubert, Nap Rucker, and the veteran Wee Willie Keeler, whose long career made him a familiar name by then. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the news-photo files of a New York photographer who documented everyday life and sporting events in the early twentieth century. Three of the players are unidentified in the record, so the names listed are the only firm guide to who stands where.
