Its headline asks the reader directly, "Is your name on this list?", and the poster pairs that question with a row of photographs captioned for different branches of service: a North Sea scene, a periscope view, a "clean hit," and a line of men ready to fill the ranks. Issued in 1917, after the United States entered the First World War that April, it came from the Mayor's Committee on National Defense's recruiting arm in New York. Its appeal was aimed at the city's men, and it shows how wartime recruiting used photography, which still felt fresh and factual, to make the conflict seem immediate.
