Rather than a single scene, this 1917 poster combines four photographs captioned *All aboard*, *With bayonet*, *On the way to the transports*, and *Embarking for the front*, which follow a recruit from departure to the battlefield. It was issued by the Recruiting Committee of the Mayor's Committee on National Defense in New York, months after the United States entered the war in April 1917. Its headline asks readers to leave "their own little circle of selfishness" for "the big circle of service," turning enlistment into a personal civic duty. The sheet is labeled Bulletin no. 3, which suggests it was one of a numbered series.
