This poster belongs to Theodore Roosevelt's 1898 campaign for governor of New York, and it pairs his name with Timothy Woodruff, his running mate for lieutenant governor. Roosevelt came home that summer from the Spanish-American War as a national figure, having led the Rough Riders up San Juan Hill in Cuba, and that reputation carried into the New York race. The Republican ticket won in November, and the governorship gave Roosevelt the public standing that led to his nomination for vice president in 1900. The poster is a useful reminder of how quickly wartime fame was turned into state-level political capital.
