Urias A. McGill, identified in a handwritten note as a merchant of Monrovia, appears in this sixth plate daguerreotype, made between 1854 and 1860 and hand-colored. The double case, lined in red velvet with brass leaves at the corners, bears a stamp on its brass mat for A. Washington of 136 Main Street, Hartford, Connecticut. The American Colonization Society, founded in 1817 to resettle Afro-Americans in Liberia, kept records that include this portrait, tying the image to the Monrovia settlement where McGill did business.
