Fashion Plate was the brand name on this crate label, which marks it as the work of a particular Northwest apple shipper rather than a generic fruit picture. Crate labels like this were pasted on the ends of wooden boxes so that buyers in distant cities could recognize a grower's brand before they saw the fruit. Orchards in Washington and Oregon depended on railroads to reach eastern markets, and bright lithographed art helped a crate stand out on a loaded freight car or a grocer's shelf. The colors and layout show how the fruit industry used commercial art to sell its product.
