Few crate labels from the Pacific Northwest apple trade are as recognizable as this one, which carries the Silver Spur name and the Yakima-Wenatchee growing region of Washington state. Labels like it were pasted onto wooden shipping boxes so that buyers in distant markets could tell at a glance where the fruit came from and what grade it was. The Yakima and Wenatchee valleys became major apple-producing areas in the early twentieth century, after irrigation projects made dry orchard land productive, and cooperative packing houses used bright, graphic labels to compete for shelf attention. Today such labels are valued as examples of commercial printing and of the regional identity that the fruit trade built.
