What sets this label apart is its brand name, "America's Delight," a patriotic pitch that growers in the Northwest used to tie their fruit to national pride. Like most crate labels, it was a color lithograph pasted onto the end of a wooden apple box, where it had to catch the eye of buyers in crowded eastern markets after long railroad hauls from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Labels like this were both advertising and a way for a packing house to build a name for consistent quality, and today they are prized for their bold color and their record of how fruit was sold before supermarket packaging took over.
