Fashion Plate" was the brand name on this crate label, meant to suggest a polished, stylish fruit. Labels like it were pasted onto wooden apple crates shipped from Northwest orchards, where growers competed for buyers in distant eastern markets once railroads opened the region. Printers used bright color lithography to make each crate stand out on a crowded grocer's floor or railroad platform. Today these labels show how the apple trade sold itself through design, with lettering and pictures meant to signal quality before a buyer ever saw the fruit.
