A glass negative dated January 3, 1927, records a portrait of Miss Katherine Watson, though her name comes from the sleeve that held the plate and has not been checked against other sources. The Washington, D.C.-based National Photo Company produced large numbers of such plates in the early twentieth century, documenting local residents, public events and visiting figures for newspapers and private clients. The collection reached the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Look closely and you will see streaks and blotches, which come from the coatings on the glass deteriorating over the decades.
