Washington Course, a racing ground in Charleston, South Carolina, is the subject here, shown in an engraving made for Beaufain Irving's 1857 book *The South Carolina Jockey*. H. Bosse engraved the image from a daguerreotype by B.Y. Glen, so it records a scene first captured by early photography and then translated into an engraving, since printing presses of the period could not reproduce photographs directly. Horse racing was a prominent pastime among Charleston's planter and sporting society before the Civil War, and a book on the turf like this one documents that culture. The image is worth noticing for its layering of technologies: a camera image turned into an engraved plate for print.
