The title, "The very professional underground politico," points to the figure at the center of this drawing, a caricature of a shadowy political operative. It was published on October 29, 1972, alongside two articles on the Watergate affair. One asked how the scandal compared with earlier dirty tricks in presidential campaigns, and the other asked how far it reached into the administration of President Richard Nixon. The break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters had taken place in June, and the drawing appeared just days before the November election. Its ink, felt-tip, and white overlay give it a stark, layered finish worth noticing up close.
