Theodore Roosevelt took the presidential oath twice, and this picture belongs to that story of a sudden transfer of power and a later formal ceremony. He first took the oath in September 1901 at the Buffalo, New York, home of Ansley Wilcox, after William McKinley died from an assassin's gunshot wounds, and the swearing-in was brief and unceremonial. His formal inauguration came on March 4, 1905, on the east front of the U.S. Capitol, where he delivered an address laying out his plans for a second term. Inaugurations of that era drew large crowds and were closely covered by the press, so the setting and the gathered onlookers are worth a close look.
