Pollard's coach-and-horses scenes made him one of the best-known painters of the Regency and early Victorian road, and this print shows the Unicorn coach bound for Norwich, one of the busy routes out of London. Charles Hunt's aquatint translates Pollard's painting into a color print, using the tonal softness of the process to render the gleam of harness, the weight of the coach body, and the restless horses. Published in London in 1830, it appeared just as railways were beginning to challenge the stagecoach, so it captures a form of travel that was about to change.
