The subject here is a stagecoach on a Philadelphia street at Christmas in the 1790s, a holiday scene that J.L.G. Ferris painted in oil. From 1790 to 1800 Philadelphia was the seat of the young federal government, and stagecoaches were a main link between the city and other towns, so travel at the season would have been a familiar sight. This color halftone reproduction was issued around 1932 as part of *The Pageant of a Nation*, a series of prints drawn from Ferris's paintings of American history. It reflects the period's taste for nostalgic views of the early republic.
