*Bicycling*, issued by L. Prang & Co. of Boston around 1887, is one of the firm's color aquarelles, which were lithographs designed to resemble watercolor washes, and it was drawn by the illustrator Hy Sandham. It dates from the early years of the American bicycle craze, when riding had become a fashionable pastime and machines were shifting from the tall front-wheeled ordinary toward the safety bicycle with chain drive and wheels of equal size. Prang's color prints reached a broad middle-class public, so the stylish dress and leisure setting show as much about the period's habits as the machines do.
