This map shows Albemarle County in central Virginia, the place Thomas Jefferson called home for most of his life. Monticello, his mountaintop house, sits within its borders, and the county was also where he later founded the University of Virginia near Charlottesville. Jefferson trained as a surveyor as a young man and kept a lifelong interest in maps, so a county map from his circle reflects both his local ties and his habit of measuring and recording the land around him. Early American county maps like this one were practical tools for land ownership, roads, and local government, and they also show how settlers understood the terrain.
