Shahn's serigraph takes its title from the Pleiades, the star cluster named in the Book of Job: "Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades?" (Job 38:31). The Hebrew text of Job 38:31-38 accompanies the image, so the scripture and the stars are presented together. Shahn, a Lithuanian-born painter and printmaker known for socially engaged work, made this piece around 1959 or 1960, when screen printing was gaining recognition as a fine-art medium. The edition of 75 is signed by hand in red paint.
