The steer at the center of this 1877 lithograph is credited to George Ayrault of New York, who both owned and fattened the animal, and the title proclaims it the champion of the world. Currier & Ives produced many prints of prize livestock during these decades, when showing large, well-fed cattle drew crowds at agricultural fairs and carried real prestige for their owners. The hand coloring adds warmth to the animal's hide and the rural setting, details a plain black-and-white reproduction would lose. The sheet is listed as number 1081 in the firm's catalog raisonné.
