Sydney in 1922 was the largest city in Australia, a harbor metropolis of roughly a million people whose economy ran on wool and wheat shipped out through its wharves, along with manufacturing in the inner suburbs. Ferries crossed the harbor between the north shore and the city, and electric trams carried commuters along a network that reached far into the suburbs. The Harbour Bridge was still a proposal, and debate over where and how to link the two shores of the harbor was a live political question in New South Wales. Many residents were still adjusting to the years after the First World War, when returned soldiers sought work and housing and the city's population kept spreading outward. The map shows the harbor, the waterfront, and the dense city core that Sydneysiders of the day would have recognized as the center of their lives.
