A girl riding a donkey at the head of a procession is the detail that sets this picture apart from the other views on the World's Fairs board, which tend to show grand halls, towers, and crowds. The print dates to 1889, the year Paris hosted its Exposition Universelle, the fair that gave the Eiffel Tower to the world. Fairs of this period often included street scenes and costumed attractions meant to suggest faraway places, and a donkey rider in the foreground would have drawn the eye of visitors to a busy, lively city view. Looking closely, the figure in front gives the scene a human scale that the monumental buildings behind her lack.
