This portrait shows John Bell Hood, the Confederate general whose Texas brigade and later division fought in the fighting west of Little Round Top on July 2, 1863. The caption card gives no date or photographer, so the exact year and circumstances of the sitting are unknown. Hood was badly wounded at Gettysburg, and he later lost a leg at Chickamauga in September 1863. He went on to lead the Army of Tennessee in 1864, which makes his photograph a useful record of a commander whose career was shaped by the battles he fought.
