A glass negative titled simply "Inauguration," the record gives no date or location, so the event it shows can't be pinned down from the catalog entry alone. The title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its negatives, and those cards were often written in haste, so the label itself is unverified. George Grantham Bain founded the agency in New York around 1899, and its staff covered politics, disasters and daily news for newspapers. Its glass plates, with their fine tonal detail, remain a useful record of early twentieth-century public ceremony.
