The caption card identifies the sitter only as J.F. Booth, and the record gives no date or place, so the man himself remains unidentified. The picture survives as a small glass negative, a format that Bain News Service used heavily for its newspaper and magazine clients in the early twentieth century. Bain's staff sent such plates to editors who needed quick, reproducible images of people in the news, so the negative was made to be printed rather than kept as a finished portrait. Its names were often recorded secondhand, which is why the caption is marked as unverified.
