Damascus Gate is one of the most elaborate entrances in the walls of Jerusalem's Old City, built under the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 1530s and facing the road north toward Damascus. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency of the early twentieth century, supplied this title, though the record marks it as unverified. The source note places the original photograph somewhere between 1850 and 1870, when Western photographers were beginning to document the Holy Land. This glass negative is a copy held in the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress.
