A tall hat, a long frock coat, and a cane held as much for posture as for support make this portrait of an unnamed older man a study in late nineteenth-century dress. The formal clothing suggests a sitter who wanted to look respectable and prosperous, which was typical of studio portraits taken in Texas towns during the decades after the Civil War, when photographers' studios had become common in growing cities. Such portraits were often made for family use, sent to relatives, or kept as a record of a settled life. Notice the stiff pose, the long exposure times that required sitters to hold still, and the plain backdrop, all of which shaped how people presented themselves to the camera.
