This picture shows Theodore Roosevelt being received aboard the Illinois, the battleship named in its title. The Illinois was commissioned in 1901 and served with the U.S. Navy's Atlantic battle fleet, so the scene reflects the close ties between the president and the navy during his administration. The Bain News Service caption is the only source for the title, and the record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unconfirmed. The photograph is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures made in the early 1900s.
