Olga Nethersole, the English-born actress, is the subject of this Bain News Service glass negative, and the record gives no date for the sitting. Nethersole was known for intense dramatic roles, and her 1900 production of *Sapho* in New York led to her arrest on charges of indecency, a case that kept her in the newspapers. The Bain company made and distributed news photographs of stage and public figures in that period. The title comes from caption data the record describes as unverified, so the exact occasion behind the portrait is uncertain.
