The title, "The Hatuey, Cuba," points to the name of Hatuey, the Taíno leader who resisted Spanish conquest on the island and was burned at the stake in 1512, though the record doesn't say whether the picture shows a ship, a building, or a place that bears the name. The negative is one of the Bain News Service glass plates in the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain's company photographed news events, notable people, and places across the United States and abroad in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption data the agency wrote on the plate or its card, which has not been verified, so the exact subject and occasion remain uncertain.
