Maurice Neumont signed this poster at the Bois de Vaux-Chapitre on the Verdun front on April 10, 1917, so it was made close to the fighting it portrays. Its slogan, "On ne passe pas" ("They shall not pass"), became the rallying cry of the defense of Verdun, which held through much of 1916. The poster was issued by the Union des Grandes Associations Françaises contre la propagande ennemie and shows a French soldier who claims to have already stopped the enemy twice on the Marne. The title's "1914 . . . 1918" was written before 1918 arrived, so it works as a hopeful forecast meant to steady civilian morale while the war dragged on.
