Winged angels, not concert performers, dominate this color lithograph, which presents a Sohmer piano as something close to heavenly. The title claims the instruments are "preferred by the leading artists," a common pitch in the 1880s, when piano makers courted concert pianists and singers whose endorsements could persuade middle-class buyers. Sohmer & Company, a New York piano firm, registered the copyright, and the title credits G.E. Ciani with the design. The mix of allegory and sales message is typical of late nineteenth-century advertising art.
