The title, "Ford North cliff," names a cliff, but the location is unverified, since the National Photo Company's label on the negative is the only source for it. The company, active around 1916 and 1917, made large numbers of scenic and landmark views on glass plates, which were widely reproduced as postcards and lantern slides for a public eager to see the American landscape. Glass negatives of this age often show streaks and blemishes as their coatings deteriorate, and this one carries such marks, so its surface records its history as well as its subject.
