Few pictures pair Abraham Lincoln so directly with the place he called home. This one shows his Springfield residence alongside a horse, a reminder of how much a lawyer depended on horses to travel the Eighth Judicial Circuit. Lincoln bought the modest house on South Eighth Street in 1844 and lived there with his growing family until he left for Washington in February 1861. It was the only home he ever owned, and it is now preserved as part of the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, where visitors can see how a rising Illinois attorney lived.
