The Lincoln Home in Springfield, Illinois, is the setting for this scene, a place Abraham Lincoln bought in 1844 and lived in with his wife, Mary Todd, and their sons until he left for Washington in February 1861. The house, on the corner of Eighth and Jackson streets, was a modest one-and-a-half-story frame home in a growing neighborhood of lawyers and tradesmen, and it stands today as part of the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. Its significance lies in how closely it ties the president-elect to the ordinary civic life of the Midwest before the Civil War reshaped the nation. Notice how the house anchors the picture: it is a reminder that Lincoln's public career rose from a private family home.
