Few pictures capture the Chicago leg of Lincoln's final journey as directly as this one, which shows the president's body on display in 1865. Chicago was one of many stops on the slow funeral train that carried Lincoln from Washington toward his home in Springfield, Illinois, and crowds in each city waited for hours to file past the coffin. Photographer S.M. Fassett, working in Chicago, recorded the ceremony, and prints like this one carried images of the mourning city to people who could not attend. Today the picture helps historians understand the public grief and ritual that followed the assassination.
