Rather than the battlefield scenes most people associate with Spain's civil war, this color lithograph warns hikers in Catalan: "Excursionistes, seguiu prudents amb el foc! El foc!" Issued by the forest service of the Department of Agriculture, it dates from between 1936 and 1939, when Republican-side agencies produced posters on civilian concerns as well as the war itself. Its two couples show the walkers and picnickers the message was aimed at, reminding ordinary people enjoying the countryside that a careless flame could spread quickly through dry woodland.
