Denton True "Cy" Young appears here as a pitcher for the Boston Americans, the club he joined in 1901, when the American League was new. He was one of the era's most durable arms, and in 1902 he won 28 games for Boston, helping the franchise find its footing in the young league. The picture is a Bain News Service photograph, from a wire-photo agency whose collection the Library of Congress later acquired. The 1902 date rests on research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee, not on an original caption.
