Boston's waterfront in about 1906 looks busy in this bird's-eye view, with piers, wharves and at least one side-wheel steamer crowding the harbor edge. Photographs like this were often issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which copyrighted and sold views of American cities and landscapes in the early 1900s. By then Boston's wharves were still central to the city's shipping and passenger trade, before rail and later road traffic shifted much of that work elsewhere. The picture is worth studying for its record of how the working harbor was laid out before those changes.
