The title is cut off, so this view can't be pinned to an exact spot, but it places the picture on the second day of fighting at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. That afternoon Confederate attacks hit the Union line from the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield to Devil's Den and Little Round Top, and some of the battle's heaviest combat took place across this ground. Photographers including Alexander Gardner and Timothy O'Sullivan worked over the field in the days that followed, producing some of the earliest surviving images of a major battle's aftermath. Views like this one are worth studying for the terrain and for the traces the fighting left behind.
