A tobacco label from Havana names its subject outright: the Star Club, a ballclub shown at play in the 1860s. The label is printed in both Spanish and English and advertises the cigars of R. & W., a Havana factory whose proprietors, Ruhe & Weikel, registered the design for copyright in December 1867. Baseball was spreading through Cuba in these years, carried by Cuban and American players, and cigar makers often borrowed fashionable sporting scenes to sell their brands.
