This wood engraving, published in Harper's Monthly in 1873, shows a ball club of young men at Hampton Institute in Virginia, offering a glimpse of Black students at play in a widely read national magazine. Hampton had been founded in 1868 to educate formerly enslaved people and their children, pairing academic study with trades and farm work, so a game there reflects leisure within a demanding school routine. Baseball was spreading quickly through American towns and schools in the 1870s, and the engraver has captured the players' poses and the open field around them.
