Set apart by its title, the "Bachelor [sic] Baseball Club" is a group of 13 individual portraits of club members, each mounted as a carte de visite. The cards were made by several different studios, including those of Frederick Gutekunst, A. Newman, and C.H. Spieler, so the set shows how widely a single team's players could be photographed by different hands. In the 1860s, baseball was still an amateur pastime organized by local clubs, and cartes de visite were a popular, inexpensive format that people collected in albums. Together the cards offer a record of the early club game and its players.
