The title, *The Hartford Convention or Leap no leap*, points to a gathering of Federalist delegates scheduled to meet in Hartford, Connecticut, in December 1814. Their debate over how far New England should go in opposing the War of 1812 gave the print its subject, and the pun in "Leap no leap" suggests the satire turns on whether those men would take a dangerous final step. William Charles, who signed the plate, produced it in Philadelphia, and the Library's hand-colored impression was deposited for copyright by Samuel Kennedy on December 10, 1814. An uncolored impression on wove paper also survives in the collection.
